July Fun Heats Up Safety Risks
While July’s a hot month for summer fun, it is also peak season for accidental injuries. For starters,
July kicks off with Independence Day and fireworks displays. Although legal for individuals to use in some
states, fireworks send thousands of Americans to hospitals each year. According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated about 9,200 fireworks-related injuries in 2006.

students pursuing safety careers now can sign up for a free National Safety Council membership. Student member benefits
will include opportunities to network with seasoned safety and health leaders, stay current on industry news, and tap
into the Council’s more than 95 years of safety knowledge and experience.
The Council also launched a Faculty Portal for college and university faculty who teach future safety professionals.
Once registered, faculty will be able to order desk copies of books, access a complete list of NSC Press books, and obtain

Thank You for “Making A Difference” This National Safety Month
This year’s National Safety Month observance highlighted the need to reduce the leading causes of unintentional injury
in this country. After years of decline, the rate of
unintentional injuries and deaths in the U.S.
has risen to new and
unacceptable levels. Every 4 minutes, someone is killed as a result of a preventable injury. By dramatically reducing the
leading risks to our safety and health, we can reverse this trend and save hundreds of thousands of lives and billions
of dollars.
The National Safety Council is proud of the cooperative efforts by the government, the nation’s employers and the general public to
“make a difference” this June. We encourage you to stay committed to injury prevention throughout the year.
National Safety Month posters and risk & tip sheets will remain available online for a limited time, free of charge, at
nsc.org/nsm.
